Western Railway Museum

The Western Railway Museum is not your typical train museum. Brought to you by the Bay Area Electric Railroad Association, the Western Railway Museum is dedicated to preserving the history and importance of electric transit systems, both past, and present. They procure and protect the equipment, property, and materials used over the years in the operation of electric railways.

The museum was founded in 1946 when a group of people chartering an old Oakland streetcar learned the streetcar was to be scrapped that very day. They pulled together the money to buy the streetcar on the spot, and the Western Railway Museum was born.

They continued collecting streetcars and other artifacts, and by 1960, they purchased a site at Rio Vista Junction, an actual stop on the Northern main line in Solano County. They transformed 22 acres into a living history museum and have been preserving and promoting the electrically powered railway systems of the past century.

Visit the museum for just $10 per person with discounts for seniors and children. Admission includes all rides and exhibits. Take a 50-minute ride on the Interurban, leaving four times daily. Or jump on the streetcar for a 15-minute ride, leaving every 30 minutes between Interurban departures.
