3 Fascinating Bookstores Near SacramentoModern technology made information easier to access, with people using e-readers and the internet instead of reading a book. This doesn’t mean the magic of visiting a bookstore has vanished, though. These bookstores in and near Sacramento, California, are clear proof of that.

Time Tested Books

Having been around since 1891, this charming establishment is now one of Northern California’s best-stocked bookstores. Book lovers will definitely enjoy a visit to this place, with many new and used quality books on sale and very knowledgeable staff to help them at every step of the way. Those who miss the days when technology was poorer and art was better will also discover a great selection of vinyl records.

Located on Sacramento’s 21st Street, this locally owned business keeps its customer base engaged by hosting many entertaining events, such as book signings, author readings, lectures, as well as live music performances. If you enjoy quality books and good music, you may become a regular.

Beers Books

Despite the intriguing name, the story behind Beers Books has nothing to do with beer. It was, instead, borrowed from a lady called Nellie Beer, who used to work as a clerk when the bookstore was initially opened, back in 1936. Back then, it was called L.H. Mytinger Books, but it was later changed to Beers Book Store, and later just Beer Books.

Having survived multiple ownership and location changes, Beers Books has been owned by the same person since 1985 and has the same Sacramento location since 2004. Nowadays most of their products are used books and movies, with a strong focus on quality. They still give new authors a platform, though, with about 10% of their books being new ones. They constantly change their selection of used books, making it a good place to frequently visit.

Crawford’s Books

This bookstore is a family business and was established in 1983 by Jim and Joyce Crawford. With an awesome collection of books, mainly consisting of westerns, military history books, romance novels, and mystery books, they quickly gained a reputation around Sacramento. This enabled them to keep on growing and frequently moving to larger store locations, until settling in their current location on Freeport Boulevard in 2007.

The original owners retired in 2017, with long-time fans of the bookstore Sue and Greg Richards taking over management duties in early 2018. Still home to a wide variety of captivating books, the future plan is for Crawford’s Books to evolve into a bookstore especially aimed at local schoolchildren, with a well-stocked children’s section which aims to ignite life-long passions for books and reading. Until then, they keep their selections fresh by constantly finding new books and trading with customers.

A good book manages to immerse the reader in its story in a way that no 3-D movie or modern video game can. Although our options for entertainment have increased at an astonishing rate over the years, once in a while everyone should visit a bookstore and escape reality for at least a few hours.
